Black cats have been associated with bad luck and evil for hundreds of years. But why? Would a black cat crossing your path really bring bad luck?
It all depends on how we think, and even where we live. In the Middle East black color is associated with mourning and loss, therefore considered unlucky. Let’s take Lebanon as an example, on April, 2015 “LOTO Lebanais” launched a controversial Black Cat ad campaign, asking Lebanese people to give away their cats in order to say #Goodbyebadluck, the idea was centered about giving the Lebanese a big favor by getting rid of all the Black Cats and shipping them to New Zealand.
November is National Pet Awareness Month, which makes it a great time to raise awareness about Black Cats. Here are some quirky facts that make them stand out,
They typically have yellow golden eyes due to melanism; the excessive melanin in these cats causes their fur to be so black.
Better immune system than most other cats, higher resiliency against illness and are more resistant against diseases like feline HIV.
Black Cats fur can turn gray to white with age.
Black Cats go with every décor, and the best of all you can’t see their fur on your furniture.
Better hunters, since cats love to do most of their hunting’s at night. Black Cats have an advantage, their prey would never see them coming.
Throw away that lint brush! A black dress will hide any loose cat hair.
Black Cats are sleek, chic, stunning, royal looking pets. Look beyond the coat, they have all the charm and charisma. Their sleek glossy fur complements their bright shining eyes. Even though their history is linked to witches, these cats are not bad luck and have nothing to do with black magic. The behavioral patterns of these cats are just like the patterns of any other feline.
You know that feeling you had when you were picked last for a group game in school? That’s how a rescued black must feel every time another cat finds a forever home. So if you do live in an area with a local shelter allowing pet adoption, this is the perfect chance for non-animal abusers to adopt a black cat, rescue the mistreated, save the injured, and love the abandoned.
